From the theater it was only a short drive around a hill and over the original course of the river (that had dried up after the Soviets came) to get to the site of the petrified trees. They did not appear much at first - in fact they look remarkably like trees. Here the children took time (after greeting Sugar) to examine the trees, look at the other rocks nearby, and examine the small shrubs that grew there. There was some excitement when the monks discovered a car had been there the night before, overturned several of the stumps, and had taken at least one of them away to sell to overseas collecters. This is a big problem for many historical or natural sites in Mongolia. |
