Contrarian Ultimate

The following pages document my views on how Ultimate should be played. It is aimed at people with a good understanding of ultimate; for those wanting an introductory level look here.

Most people will probably disagree with large parts of it: in particular, I dislike:

See my alternatives in these poorly written and poorly edited (but well thought-out) notes. I will try to arrange them prettier when I have time. They are based on a series of emails I sent out to my summer league team last year (which went undefeated).

These ideas are not based just on theory, but on having seen the way ultimate was played and has changed since the mid 70s. My credentials are here.

To be fair, I should admit that I have been in China 1988-1992 and 1996-present, so I have not been to top-level tournaments in some time. However, I have seen and spoken to many good players that have come through Asia, and believe these ideas are appropriate for beginning to midlevel clubs, and would be worth consideration by all.

News flash! While home for the holidays I was cleaning up some old papers and found a copy of the proposed 7th edition rules from 1978. It is interesting to compare the rules then with now, so I copied them in, and put them here. If anyone has copies of other older sets of rules I would appreciate having them sent to me.

Comments? I would be happy to hear any opinions, however wrong they might be:)
